Endurance Part 1 Chapter 6-Part 2 Chapter 1

Important Quote: " 'She's going boys,' he said. 'I think it's time to get off.' (Lansing 60)"

Lit Term: complex sentence- "By the time the job was completed, it was too late to get under way. (Lansing 55)"

Discussion: Now we get to the evacuation of the Endurance. After months of battling a fearsome blizzard, sub-zero temperatures, pressure shocks, and immense snow, the crew must abandon ship. Everyone was working to free the ship of the enourmous ice flows squeezing her. At most, the crew had three hours of sleep. They used all they could to free the ship. Now it's a race against time to empty the needed materials from the ship and travel to the nearest human outpost. Even worse, the men could carry few possessions with them to maximize their survival. Shackleton made this clear. He was the first. He threw three of his most cherished possessions: a gold cigarette case, several gold sovereigns, and the bible Queen Alexandria had given him with two pages torn out. Shackleton kept the page with the Twenty-third Psalm and a page from the book of Job. Shackleton's gesture reveals the inner strength that he has. Many of the men followed suit. Shackleton's gesture showed how what it takes to survive the antarctic desert.
